My current students range from 5-68 years old, and include all levels of ability from beginners to grade 8 and above. My studio is very international and in addition to all my British students I have also had students from all over the world including Ireland, Sweden,
Germany, Spain, Italy, USA, Quwait, China, and Nigeria. I am happy to take private students on violin, viola and baroque violin.

My teaching is very adaptable according to each students needs, and includes elements from different teaching methods, notably repertoire from the Suzuki school. Most students will roughly follow the ABRSM Grade progression whether or not they are taking exams, but even though the basics will be the same all students are different, and will need individual tailoring of their lesson plans.

Anna - Ayr beachMy younger students (5-10 years old), will gain confidence and the ability to play music through coordination games and singing. Although I do use music notation quite early, even for young students, about half of their learning will be without music for the first year. I see music reading as one of many skills that are part of a musical training, but it’s definitely not the only one. I believe that young students often enjoy working without music, and they should not always be constrained by dots on a piece of paper.

The many aspects of music making to learn in addition to just reading music off a page includes the feeling of pulse, to be able to understand and play different rhythms, developing the ability to remember, sing and play melodies, and perfect the hearing so that the mind is sensitive to intonation.

All this is in addition to the challenge of learning how to hold and handle the violin and bow. This is why I feel that children should be comfortable and confident in these areas before having to read musical notation at all times. After the first year, however, most students will have reached a level of ability where they can easily read music while continuing to develop all other qualities.

The lesson fee is £14 for 30 minutes and £21 for 45 minutes. Private lessons are held in my teaching studio just off Saltmarket, near Glasgow Green.
