My current students range from 5 - 55 years old, and include all levels of ability from beginners to grade 8 and above. I am happy to take private students on both violin, viola and baroque violin.
My teaching is very adaptable according to each students needs, and includes elements from different teaching methods, notably repertoire from the Suzuki school. Most students will roughly follow the ABRSM Grade progression whether or not they are taking exams, but even though the basics will be the same all students are different, and will need individual tailoring of their lesson plans.
My younger students (5-8 years old), will gain confidence and the ability to play music through coordination games and singing. Although I do use music notation quite early even for young students, about 75% of their learning will be without music notation for the first year.
There are many aspects of music making to learn in addition to just reading music off a page, such as feeling of pulse, to be able to understand and play different rhythms, developing the ability to remember, sing and play melodies, and perfect the hearing so that the mind is sensitive to intonation.
All this is in addition to the challenge of learning how to hold and handle the violin and bow. This is why I feel that children should be comfortable and confident in these areas before having to learn to read musical notation at all times. After the first year, however, most students will have reached a level of ability where they can easily take on board reading music.
The lesson fee is £22 hour and the cost of any other lesson length is based on that. Private lessons are held in my teaching studio near Glasgow Green.
